Abranet SIC NS 9B-203
Silicone Carbide abrasive medium bonded to a superior woven mesh backing with no steatites
SIC – Silicone Carbide, the ideal Abrasive for cutting Glass. Silicon Carbide is black in color. It is a sharp, hard synthetic abrasive. It has friable grains fracture meaning that rather than dulling, it breaks in a cubic pattern so that it continually produces new cutting edges so that it stays sharp through its entire life. A consistant sharp edge is the only way to cut and polish glass.
NS – No Steatites. Steatites are a soap like lubricant that is bonded into many of Mirka’s Abrasives. Much like adding Teflon to a frying pan, the Sterates help to prevent swarf and other partials from sticking and building up and clogging the spaces between the abrasive grits, causing the abrasives to stop cutting. As good as that is for most sanding applications, it is an impediment to sanding glass because of the hardness of the glass, so Abranet SIC NS has no stearates.
For deep scratches in glass or for severely scratched glass surfaces, nothing beats Abralon SIC NS. Sand with an even light pressure and a very consistent sanding pattern, blending into the surrounding areas as you sand. Be cautious of your temperatures as you sand, being sure not to exceed 160 degrees F (70C).
Once the scratches are gone, switch to Mirka Abralon for a perfect polished-smooth surface and then finish polish with Polarshine E3 on a felt polishing pad at low speeds. 1100-1500 RPM is ideal. Polarshine E3 is specially formulated for glass. Be patient, and work in small areas at a time. Just as with the Abralon, the Polarshine will not start really working until the glass reaches an ideal temperature. You will feel it grab and “kick-in” once the ideal temperature is reached.
You will love the perfectionist results you get ! I guarantee it!
