Introducing the MIRKA DE-1230 HEPA Certified Dust Extractor
The Mirka DE-1230 is designed to be the center point of Mirka’s Dust Free Sanding Systems. The DE-1230 has a three stage filtration system, a three-layer system of filters that work together to give you the HEPA standard of air quality.
We have been hearing a lot about the n-95 standard, but the HEPA standard is an even finer, higher standard of filtration than n-95.
The DE-1230 is perfect for use with both Pneumatic and Electric tools as well as with a good selection of Mirka’s Hand Sanding Blocks. With a standard 2-1/4 hose attachment, the DE-1230 will also interchange with other vacuum sanders and hoses from a variety of manufacturers. So attach your sander and you are sanding in the dust free world. When your sander is coupled with a truly Dust Free sander design, like the Mirka DEROS or DEOS, and a truly dust free Abrasive like Mirka Abranet and the rest of the industry is left in the dust. (if you’ll pardon the pun)
Dust extractors are no longer just for the cleanup phase of your workday. We live in a time when tradesmen are enlightened about staying healthy, for themselves and for their families. Constant real-time air quality control through filtration has become the norm for the modern tradesman even the astute hobbyist. Air quality control and filtration is already mandated in larger industries. Sanding and/or grinding of many different types of substrates must be 100% recovered, and probably for good reason.
Many of us smaller shops manage to fly under the radar on much of OSHA’s requirements, but it stands to reason, if it’s really for better health, why wouldn’t the rest of us want that safety and healthy cleanliness for ourselves also?
Many species of wood contain harmful bacteria; a regular shop facemask just can’t provide full protection from harmful bacteria in the airborne dust from woods like mahogany. If you are a marina or shipyard and you are sanding boat bottoms with spent antifouling paints, which contain cupreous oxide or even lead or tri-butyl tin, you really don’t want to be breathing that. If you sand concrete products that contain Crystalline Silica, or even the Silica found in body fillers and especially fiberglass fillers, then the risk of toxic contamination is very realistic.
Not enough testing has been done to really know from our vantage point, just how much protection is enough, but from a layman’s perspective, the HEPA standard of filtration is significant yet still a practical approach to a solution. And why just be safe for the sake of regulation, why not turn sanding from a tedious dusty task back into something pleasant if not enjoyable again. So, don’t just do it for the sake of regulation, do it for “Yourself”!
For those tradesmen that work on-site, inside a customer’s boat or inside a client’s home, then the DE-1230 is perfect to avoid the embarrassment of covering your workspace with dust. (not to mention the time it takes to clean it back up). Cabinet installers, Drywall finishers, Installers of Solid Surface and the like, need and appreciate being able to rely on that cleanliness when working inside a customer’s home or interior.
Air Quality is not the only arena where the Mirka DE-1230 shines, noise is also a significant concern for workers and tradesmen. Shop noise can do permanent damage to your hearing and Mirka takes that risk seriously.
Mirka boasts of a 59db sound level. But there’s more The already quiet motor becomes even more noise reducing when it turns on and off with your tool thanks to the AutoStart function. Saves your ears and also saves you time. The AutoStart feature also works with pneumatic tools with the optional addition of the DE-1200PB Pneumatic Control Box added to your Dust Extractor.
We are not qualified to determine exactly what threshold level of sound requires the use of personal hearing protection, so we just always wear it in the shop, but it is interesting to note that we often see workers talking to each other in a normal voice while the dust extractor is running. That says a lot.
For a technical comparison, Mirka boasts that the high performance turbine creates an impressive 250 millibar of Suction while moving 160 cubic feet per minute of airflow. The DE-1230-PC’s (the “PC” standing for Push Button Cleaning) One-Button cleaning keeps you at that level of performance while you work. Three pushes of the button twice a day with your hand over the end of the hose and you are good to go.
Also available is Automatic filter cleaning with the DE-1230-AFC (the “AFC” standing for Automatic Filter Cleaning). This version of the DE-1230 automatically cleans the filter once every 15 seconds. The DE-1230-AFC is popular with industries that produce extra fine dust in extra large quantities such as the Drywall finishing industry. And its not just about superior health and cleanliness, the Mirka 1230 Dust Extractor is designed with time saving convenience as well. The quality wheels and low center of gravity design allow you to drag the tool behind you by the hose as you move around the shop. The long power cord helps make that a quick reality. The flat top design allows for an optional bracket to clip your sustainer directly to the top of the dust collector so its becomes an integrated work station. Or Stack on a couple of sustainers so you can carry spare supplies along with a couple of tools.
Other accessories add to the conveniences your specific shop needs, like a handle, or a tool holder and more. Just the tool set-up time saved is amazing by having one or more tool/dust-collector combinations dedicated and set up and ready to go when you need. Mirka planned in advance for easy Cord Stowage and hose stowage on the DE-1230 Dust Extractor. Mirka also provided easy access to the HEPA filter and the vacuum bag so when maintenance is needed you are finished quickly which means you are quickly back to work. Optional “Y” adaptors are available for both Air (Pneumatic) or Electric applications so that you can run two sanders on the same vacuum.
Take the work-station concept to the next level beyond just a Systainer Case clipped to the top. Mirka offers 3 other workstation options for the DE-1230. Mirka offers a tall handle, the DE-HANDLE to make moving the DE-1230 just a little bit easier. Then there is the DE-WS (the WS standing for “Work Station”) which has a cord hook, and two tool holders and a shelf at chest height tat integrate onto the Dust Extractor. From there we can move up to the 9190310111 Dust Extractor Trolley Which features a lower shelf for the Dust Extractor, and a shelf above for tools and supplies, and an adjustable tool holder to keep your tool stowed with the hose in place for quick and easy access. Finally is my personal favorite, the MAI0CAER-912, which we call the Smart Cart Trolley. The Smart Cart a favorite of body shops and boat shops. The Smart Cart is really more than just a mobile work station, its almost a down right mobile shop. The smart cart features a larger hose holder that can handle the 33 foot integrated hose, a tool rack ready for two DEROS’s and a DEOS, and a very roomy top tray and a lockable side cabinet. The smart cart even sports a built in garbage can and there is an optional paper-towel holder.
